MannequinsComposer: John Stannard While the scale in Mannequins is based on the overtones of C, it does not stress C as a goal or center. Alternate hierarchies are explored. Attention to difference tones and overtones yields chordal structures with consonant sevenths and even consonant tritones. Alternate "minor" chords can be considerably darker. These natural intervals are especially inversion and register sensitive, affected by the clear difference tones. Certain gongs in mannequins are altered in pitch by attaching small magnets to add mass. Rotating the gongs and surrounding the audience adds a spatial quality. |
