Jay Coble

Jay Coble is Assistant Professor of Trumpet in the School of Music at the University of South Florida in Tampa.

He received his undergraduate degree from Appalachian State University, his master’s degree from Indiana University, and earned a doctorate from the University of Southern California. His teachers and main influences have been William Adam, Joe Phelps, Roy Poper, and Boyde Hood.

Dr. Coble came to the University of South Florida from Northern State University, where he taught trumpet from 1993 to 1998. Prior to that, he was a freelance trumpet artist in the Los Angeles area.

Dr. Coble has a very diverse background and has experience playing in a wide range of styles. He has recorded for television shows such as the Tracy Ullman Show and The Simpsons, and has played on commercials for Infinity Cars, Alaska Air, Shell Oil, and Pepsi to name a few.

Dr. Coble has played many shows, including artists such as Natalie Cole, Mel Torme, and Nancy Wilson, and has toured internationally with Buddy Rich and Tom Jones.

Since coming to the University of South Florida, Dr. Coble is musically active in the Tampa Bay area, performing in shows, recitals, and appearances with the Florida Orchestra and the Florida West Coast Symphony in Sarasota. He has recorded with jazz professor Chuck Owen’s Jazz Surge and with jazz professor Jack Wilkins. He has been featured soloist with the USF Wind Ensemble and the USF Symphony Band. He has been a member of Tampa Bay groups SHIM, a free jazz group, and Bogus Pomp, a group dedicated to the music of Frank Zappa.

Dr. Coble has traveled to China to teach and perform at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and at the Conservatory of Music in Xi’An, as well as the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and the Shenyang Conservatory of Music. He taught at the International Music Camp and has been teaching at the Yellowstone Music Camp since 1991. He enjoys performing new music, and has premiered works for the Tampa Bay Composers Symposium and the 2001 Bonk Festival.

Dr. Coble is a Yamaha performing artist.
