Gordon Mumma

Gordon Mumma (b. 1935, Massachusetts) is a classically trained musician who moved on.

Well known for his participation in the now historic 1960s ONCE Festivals of new music, he was one of the four primarily performing members (with Robert Ashley, David Behrman, and Alvin Lucier) of the Sonic Arts Union. His other creative work was involved with music for theatre, film and modern-dance, notably the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, and other diverse performers and artists.

Besides his work in electronic-music engineering design, he has composed many works for conventional acoustical instruments -- primarily chamber music and solo piano works, and for pre 19th Century musical instruments. The recent New World Records issue of MUSIC FROM THE ONCE FESTIVAL includes some of his instrumental music. His electronic music (both live-electronic and of studio origin) are available from TZAKID and LOVELY MUSIC.

The website brainwashed.com/mumma contains photographs, musical examples, articles, and a detailed biography.
