Glen Whitehead

Dr. Glen Whitehead is a Senior Instructor of Music at the University of Colorado, Denver, and the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs.

He received his D.M.A. in Contemporary Music Performance and Practice from the University of California, San Diego where he studied with Edwin Harkins, George Lewis, and Anthony Davis, and received his Bachelors degree in Trumpet Performance from the New England Conservatory of Music where he studied with Timothy Morrison.

With a varied performance experience, he was Principal Trumpet for both the Monterrey Symphony Orchestra in Monterrey, Mexico, and the La Jolla Symphony Orchestra in San Diego, was the solo trumpet in Tania, an opera by Anthony Davis recorded on Kotch International records. He is a member of the improvisation quartet O'Keefe / Stanyek / Walton / Whitehead whom have recorded on 9Winds and Circumvention Records and have performed together since 1996.

In 2002 he was the CU Colorado Springs faculty representative at a weeklong workshop with Cecil Taylor at the Colorado College.

Dedicated to contemporary and creative music, Glen has played in several world premieres, has given solo performances across the United States and in Europe, and has had several collaborations including an ensemble with the Rippingtons bassist Kim Stone. In 2002, he received a President’s Fund for the Humanities Grant for a project with composer Dr. Michael Theodore, Professor of Composition at CU Boulder, for improvisation quartet and computer, which premiered in Spring 2003 at CU Colorado Springs.

As well, he collaborated with Dr. Theodore on Trumpetspeak, an interactive work for trumpet and computer, which has been performed at CU Denver and the NWEAMO Electro Acoustic Festival at San Diego State University.

Currently, He directs the CU Colorado Springs Jazz Ensemble, a Rock / Pop Ensemble at the CU Denver School of Arts and Media, and the Electro Acoustic Music Ensemble at that institution.
